Helsinki Market Squares
Reworking Helsinki’s market squares with the people who use them.

Learn · Helsingin Kaupunkitilat · 2023
With FEMMA Planning, the method went asynchronous: a batch matrix of 13 crowdsourced starting photos, 22 intervention themes and both seasons generated roughly 3,385 scenario images, curated down to about 80 for A1 posters installed at seven market squares — Kauppatori, Hakaniementori, Hietalahdentori, Töölöntori, Fredrikintori, Haagantori and Ylä-Malmin tori — where passers-by voted with stickers and by QR code.
Who took part
Residents and square visitors across seven squares, voting on site; starting photos were crowdsourced from residents, a local square association and archives.
What the tool did
Batch generation replaced the live workshop: 22 themes from community gardens to open-air theatres, rendered per square in summer and winter variants, met people where they already were — on the square itself.
Delivered together with project partners.
