From concept sketches in October 2023 to public launch in June 2024: a bespoke bilingual Arabic–English platform embedding participatory generative AI in Dubai’s official public-space planning. Crown Prince Hamdan publicly directed activation of the Dubai Urban Design Platform within a month; 272 precomputed scenario sets — roughly 1,460 images across eight themes from pocket parks to modern canals — prepared the city’s squares and streetscapes, and the first resident co-design workshop followed at Nad Al Hamar 3 park in July 2024 with more than 20 residents.
Who took part
Planners and officials of Dubai Municipality, the RTA and the Supreme Committee for Urban Planning, trained through a capacity-building programme; residents joined from the first park workshop onward.
What the tool did
A full bilingual rebuild of the platform tuned to Dubai’s squares and streetscapes, with curated precomputed scenarios enabling planner–resident co-design at government scale.
What changed
A national government commissioned, built and publicly activated a participatory-AI platform within a year — with a Crown-Prince-level directive as the activation mechanism, and institutional continuation into Dubai Municipality’s standing engagement.
