Schoolyard workshop site in the Häme region, Finland

From Playgrounds to Planning

Imagine · Architects’ Council of Europe · 2023

Under the Architects’ Council of Europe’s research call, the platform was redesigned for children aged 6–14: a simplified bilingual children’s interface, physical prompt-card decks of roughly 170 cards, and projected voting. The method was tested with a school class of about 20 elementary pupils in Finland’s Häme region in September 2023 and at a Milan museum workshop the following month.

Who took part

One class of roughly 20 elementary pupils with their teacher and 3 facilitators in Finland; children and parents at the Milan event.

What the tool did

Children photographed and redesigned their own schoolyard, worked with Stay/Learn/Play prompt-card decks, and voted on projected scenario galleries as a class.

What changed

A working children’s interface was delivered in Italian and English. The project’s own reflection: the civic-education value is real, but children’s ideas need transparent communication about what can and cannot be implemented.
